At just 18 years old, Namaganda Bridget from Nakyelogosa, Kakiri Sub-county in Wakiso District, faced a future filled with uncertainty. Coming from a family of 12 children, Bridget was forced to drop out of school in Senior Three when her parents could no longer afford her tuition.
The experience left her feeling isolated and discouraged. During school hours, she would watch other students attend classes while she remained at home, worried about what people in her community thought of her. However, her life began to change when a friend introduced her to the Empowering Youth Through Data and Community Development program at the Comprehensive Skilling Center.
Today, Bridget is a proud member of the Perfect Touch salon group and is earning an income through the skills she acquired. Her journey highlights three important ways skills development can transform the lives of young people.
1. Restoring Hope and Confidence
Dropping out of school had a significant emotional impact on Bridget. She often felt depressed and uncertain about her future.
Joining the skilling center gave her a renewed sense of purpose. She was welcomed into a supportive environment where she made new friends and discovered opportunities to learn and grow. Through mental health sessions and leadership opportunities, including serving as chairperson of the hairdressing class, Bridget developed confidence and self-belief.
The experience helped her overcome feelings of hopelessness and become more disciplined and optimistic about her future.
2. Building Practical Skills and Financial Independence
At the center, Bridget learned more than hairdressing. She also gained knowledge in saving, financial literacy, and teamwork.
These skills prepared her to become part of the Perfect Touch group, which received start-up support to establish a salon in Namusera. In a good month, the salon earns approximately UGX 200,000, generating around UGX 100,000 in profit while serving about 15 clients.
Through this income, Bridget can now meet some of her basic needs independently, including purchasing personal essentials such as sanitary products.
3. Creating Opportunities for the Future
The skills Bridget acquired have opened doors to opportunities that once seemed out of reach.
Alongside her fellow group members, she hopes to secure additional capital to brand and expand the salon business. She believes that continued growth will enable them to attract more customers, increase their earnings, and improve their livelihoods.
Beyond the financial benefits, Bridget values the friendships she has built, the reduced stress in her life, and the sense of purpose that comes from productive work.
A Message to Other Young People
Bridget’s story demonstrates that dropping out of school does not have to define a person’s future. Through skills training, mentorship, and determination, young people can rebuild their confidence and create sustainable livelihoods.
Her message to other school dropouts is simple but powerful:
Gain hands-on skills, because with a skill, you can never go hungry.
